Seahorse Class Curriculum Newsletter Autumn 2
Our teacher is Miss Young. In line with government recommendations each teacher is entitled to half a day PPA time. This will generally take place on a Wednesday and will be covered by Mrs Draper.
In literacy our Talk for Writing story will be Peace at Last. We will be learning to retell the story in sequence using a range of connectives and story language. We will be creating story maps using pictures and captions to help us remember the events in sequence. Lots of our writing tasks will be based on the story. We will be learning about nocturnal animals and completing a non fiction information report about a chosen animal. In our writing sessions we will be focussing on using finger spaces and full stops correctly. We will also be learning to use capital letters at the start of each new sentence and for names. In phonics sessions we will be learning a range of new sounds and different ways to pronounce letters. We will be reading and spelling words containing the new sounds. During guided reading sessions we will be continuing to practise reading skills to develop fluency and comprehension.
In numeracy we will be continuing to compare weight using direct comparison. We will learn to use non standard units to measure weight. We will learn to apply our skills by solving a range of number problems including missing number calculations e.g. 6 + ? = 10. We will learn the names and properties of common 2D shapes. In addition to this we will also learn about the fraction ½ . We will practise counting in ones, twos, tens and fives on a daily basis. We will also begin to learn the value of each digit in a two digit number.
In science lessons we will be learning all about trees/ plants in Autumn. We will use the school grounds to gain first hand experience of Autumn changes. We will investigate what happens to leaves and look at different ways to group/sort them. We will complete art work using the Autumn leaves and begin to learn the names of some deciduous and evergreen trees.
In RE we will continue to learn about the features of a Church. Children will learn about why people go to Church and what they would find if they visited a Church. In RE we will learn the significance of the Christmas story.

Ways to help your child
Wow words homework will be given on a Monday. Please aim to practise reading and spelling the words daily. Maths home work will be given on a Friday. Please also access Mathletics and Active Learn (Bug Club) if you have internet access. It is also important to read regularly with your child to develop fluency. Encourage them to make inferences and predictions as they read. Can they explain what they understand about a text? Is it non fiction or fiction? Home reading books are located in the colour coded boxes in the hall. Children are required to change their own reading book by choosing a book from the correct colour coded section.
It is important that children have a full PE kit (T shirt, shorts and plimsolls) in school each day. Children can keep their kit on their peg in a named bag. All PE kit items must be clearly named.
