Seahorses Curriculum Newsletter Spring 2
In Literacy our Talk for Writing story is Handa’s Surprise. We will be learning to retell the story in sequence using a range of connectives and story language. We will be creating story maps using pictures to help us remember the events in sequence. We will also do drama based activities, such as performing and hot seating to explore the characters and events from the story. We will be tasting and describing fruit that is found in the story. Lots of our writing task will be based on the story. We will retell the story and also adapt it to invent our own story. We will be listening to a range of stories and non-fiction texts. We will be discussing the features of the texts, especially non chronological reports, and will be writing our own travel brochures. We will read and discuss the information in story we have listened to. We will be developing our book handling skills and reading individually and in small groups with an adult, to develop our blending and segmenting, and increase our fluency in reading and our comprehension.
In Numeracy we will be working on our understanding and recognition of numbers. We will begin by recognizing, ordering and counting to 100 and beyond. We will continue to practise writing numbers correctly. We will begin to use problem solving to practice addition and subtraction. We continue to learn number facts, such as one more or less, and pairs of numbers that make 10 and 20, doubles and halves. We will compare and measure capacity and weight. Finally we will collect and compare information using simple charts and graphs.
In Science lessons we will be looking at spring plants. We will be learning to recognise and name some common plants and trees. We will be conducting simple experiments. We will also continue to look at the seasons and the changes we see as the year goes on.
In PE we will be focusing on dance. We will be developing our balance, posture and the range of shapes and travelling moves we can perform. We will be practicing skills to successfully perform a ceilidh dance. We will continue to practise getting ourselves ready for PE without grown-up help.
In History we will be learning about local famous people, including George Stephenson, and we will be learning all about his trains.
